Asserting that yoga is a science which plays a vital role in physical and mental well-being of a person, Assam Governor P B Acharya said time should be taken out by people to practise the ancient exercise form.
"Yoga is not a religion. It is a science. Science of well-being, science of youthfulness, science of integrating body, mind and soul," the Governor said in his message to the people of the state.
"India has every reason to be proud that our forefathers' wisdom and knowledge in making a person healthy in body and mind is now recognised by the world and International Day of Yoga has taken birth," Acharya said.
"Meditation is a way for nourishing and blossoming the divinity within you. Exercises are like prose, whereas yoga is the poetry of movements. Once you understand the grammar of yoga, you can write your poetry of movements", Acharya said.
"Yoga means addition - addition of energy, strength and beauty to body, mind and soul. Yoga practice can make us more and more sensitive to subtle sensations in the body. Paying attention to and staying with finer sensations within the body is one of the surest ways to steady the wandering mind and fulsome life", he said.
Stating that modern life is full of stress and problems, he said they put a lot of pressure on the human body causing diseases like obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes.
"Yoga plays a vital role in physical and mental well- being. It offers the cheapest and harmless solution to these problems in the form of relaxation. To live a better and healthy life, we all should spare some time for yoga in our daily routine", the Governor said ahead of the International Yoga Day to be celebrated tomorrow.
"The International Day of Yoga is not simply an event. This year, the International Yoga Day will be celebrated for the second time and it is an opportunity for all of us to make yoga a mass movement instead of only an event. We all should make it an integral part of our lives", he said.
"I appeal to all schools, colleges, universities, NGOs, student organisations, trade unions and members of the public to participate in good number and groups to make International Day of Yoga celebrations tomorrow a grand success," Acharya added.
