Two senior faculty members and some other staffers of Allahabad University were allegedly thrashed by a mob today, which charged one of the professors with "discrimination" against a physically challenged student.
The alleged beating drew sharp reactions from varsity teachers who threatened to go on a strike if stern and timely action was not taken against the guilty persons.
The incident took place at the J K Institute of Applied Physics and Technology, the name by which AU's Department for Electronics and Telecommunications is popularly known, this afternoon when a group of people barged inside the premises and beat up the department's head R R Tiwari, university sources said.
They said the assailants accused Tiwari of "constantly discouraging and humiliating" a student who had "secured admission overcoming hardships arising from his poor background and the fact that he was unable to write due to serious deformities in his hands".
The attackers also bashed up another faculty member H K Dixit when he tried to stop them and assaulted a number of other staff members who attempted to come in their way, the sources said.
The University Teachers' Association held an emergency meeting and demanded "stern action against the perpetrators within 48 hours".
Meanwhile, a case was lodged at the Karnelganj police station against "two students and about 60 unidentified persons" late in the evening.
