The incident occurred on Wednesday, when the octogenarian Tushar Panchanan, who was on a visit to the Union Territory, had engaged an autorickshaw near the old prison building in the town to go to Aurobindo Ashram.
The auto driver Vimal Raj, took him to a secluded place near the fishing harbour in Thengaithittu, near here and allegedly assaulted and robbed the retired teacher of his mobile phone and other belongings.
However, with the help of locals, Panchanan lodged a complaint with the police in Mudaliarpet who traced the auto driver today near the old prison building and arrested him.
They also impounded his autorickshaw
The accused has been remanded to judicial custody after being produced before a court today, they said.
The mobile phone and other belongings of Panchanan were recovered, police said.
