Animal Welfare Board of India has asked state police to take action against 'Theruvu Naaya Unmoolana Sangam' (Stray Dog Eradication Group) and an industrialist who supported the move even as demand is growing for more severe steps to check street dog menace in Kerala.
AWBI in a complaint to Ernakulam district Superintendent of Police alleged that the group and industrialist Kochouseph Chittilappilly were involved in illegally catching stray dogs in one of the panchayats of the district and sought action against people connected with it.
Gauri Maulkehi, co-opted member of AWBI told reporters here that killing of dogs is against law. "Implementing a scientific method of animal birth control is the solution to end street dog problem."
She alleged that Chittilappilly has promised Rs five lakh to one O N Joy, a group member, to catch dogs for dislocation.
The street dog menace in Kerala has assumed alarming proportions, forcing government to work out ways to tackle the problem.
During 2014-15, some 1.06 lakh people in the state were bitten by dogs, according to the state government.
A three-year-old boy was seriously injured in a stray dog attack near his house at Kothamangalam near Kochi recently.
