'Basic policy consensus marks Indian democratic system'

There has been a basic policy consensus in the country as successive governments have always worked within the democratic system, Burdwan District Magistrate Saumitra Mohan has said.
"As a country, people of India have been comfortable with their democratic system over years. We as a country have been doing reasonably well in all these years," he told PTI after the launch of his 'Selected Contemporary Essays' here.
Coming to policy makers, he said, "Though we may have negative views about them sometimes, they have been responding when it comes to core national issues. That core consensus has always been there."

Mohan, entrusted with the administration of one of the key districts of West Bengal and credited with introducing unique projects in Burdwan, said IAS aspirants should always be positive, irrespective of what happens at that moment.
"You have to always stay positive. If we become negative, that gets reflected in our action," he said.
Stating that his book is primarily meant for civil service aspirants, he remarked, "Writing is a good stress buster."

"I wake up at 4 AM, this is my routine. If you want to do things, there is a way," Mohan, a former journalist, said.
He said IAS aspirants should have a holistic personality which will help them excel in life.

Former state minister Manish Gupta said the book willl certainly be of great help to civil service candidates.
Gupta also dwelt on India's federal status for the past 70 years and said states were increasingly taking more dominant roles now.
The book has been published by Mcgraw Hill.
