Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi today demanded a CBI probe into the "imbroglio" regarding admission of students into the first MBBS course in private medical colleges of Puducherry last year (2016-2017).
In a WhatsApp message to mediapersons, she referred to the Medical Council of India's (MCI) order dated September 7, directing the government of the union territory to "discharge" (removal from the rolls) the students admitted into the MBBS course in private medical colleges under the management quota in 2016-2017, in contravention of rules.
She said, "Justice demands that the CBI investigate the matter and chargesheet all those responsible for creating the situation (discharge of candidates)."
Students who had not not undergone the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) counselling were admitted under the management quota by the deemed-to-be universities and private medical colleges here in 2016-2017.
Students were also admitted after the expiry of the last date (September 30, 2016).
The MCI had, after perusing the complaints of the Students' and Parents' Association of Puducherry, directed the government to "discharge the students" admitted in violation of rules and norms.
It had also directed the government to submit a compliance report within two weeks.
In the WhatsApp message, the former IPS officer said the Central Vigilance Commission should also inquire into the "negligence of all the officers responsible for the current situation".
