A police picket was posted in front of the Dum Dum school where an 11-year-old student died on September 11 allegedly in shock after being confined inside a toilet of the school allegedly by her seniors.
"Nearly 1000 Christian schools are today closed across the state. While no protest is ever a happy occasion, we are glad and satisfied to inform you that today's expression of our anguish went off peacefully without any incident," Father Moloy B D'Costa, secretary, West Bengal Association of Christian Schools, said.
Rev Abir Adhikari, honorary secretary, Diocese of Calcutta, said that the students and guardians have cooperated with WBACS in organising the shutdown.
Archbishop Thomas D'Souza, head of the Roman Catholic Church of the Kolkata Diocese and head of West Bengal Association of Christian Schools, on September 16 had announced the shutdown.
