A Bengali text book for Class 12 which contained a long para on contribution of former rebel Trinamool Congress MP and singer Kabir Suman to contemporary Bengali music, was today ordered to be withdrawn.
Without ascribing any reason for the withdrawal of the book 'Bangalir Bhasha o Sanskriti' (The language and culture of Bengali people), Partha Chatterjee who recently replaced Bratya Bose as Education minister instructed the withdrawal of the book forthwith.
The book was asked to be withdrawn for reportedly giving less importance to luminaries like Debabrata Biswas, the legendary singer of Rabindrasangeet.
Chatterjee told a TV news channel "No one has made a demand. It has come to our notice and some newspapers had also reported it yesterday."
Suman, a Kolkata-based modern Bengali singer-songwriter and musician contested the Lok Sabha election on a Trinamool Congress ticket from Jadavpur constituency in 2009.
He was subsequently suspended from the party after he fell out with the party leadership on different issues including stoking controversy within his party by supporting the call for withdrawal of security forces from earlier Maoist-hit 'junglemahal'.
He was not given ticket by the Trinamool Congress in the 2014 Lok Sabha poll.
Chatterjee said that he told president of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, Mahua Das, chairman the West Bengal Syllabus Reforms Committee Aveek Mazumdar, and Education Secretary Arnab Roy, to withdraw the book from shops from today.
"I have asked them to see whether students are facing difficulties or if there is any controversial matter in books published by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education and others," he said.
Referring to the Higher Secondary Council, he said "Though an autonomous body, its activities have a bearing on the government and people find fault with the government.
