Bhattarai submits Constitution committee's report to Parl

Amidst serious differences among political parties regarding the key issues of Nepal's new constitution, a crucial report was today submitted to the Constituent Assembly for discussions on the statute, to be promulgated by January next year.
Chairman of the Constitutional Political Dialogue and Consensus Committee (CPDCC), Baburam Bhattarai, who is also a senior leader of unified CPN Maoist, has submitted the committee's report, a month after the scheduled date.
A meeting of the three major political parties had earlier agreed to send back all the disputed issues of the new constitution to Constituent Assembly (CA), after the parties failed to forge agreements on key issues.

There are serious differences among the political parties regarding the key issues of constitution, including form of governance, number of federal units and electoral system.
After handing over the report to CA chairman Subhas Nembang, Bhatarai said that he has submitted the report without showing any bias and only after holding consultations with top leaders of all major political parties.
Bhattarai claimed that he has incorporated in the draft report all the proposals forwarded by the political parties.

After receiving the report, CA chairman Nembang also expressed the view that there is no alternative then to fast- track the constitution drafting process to ensure that the new constitution is issued on time.

The CA meeting has been scheduled for December 9 to discuss the report.
The political parties have set January 22 as a deadline for promulgating the new constitution.
