Launching the first wind instruments festival of the country, percussionist Bickram Ghosh has said 'pipe instruments' have been in vogue in different parts of the globe for ages.
"We seldom feel how important an acoustic instrument has been in vocal music, in solo or in duet," the Rhythmscape man said at the inaugural launch of his brainchild Calcutta Piep Piper Festival 2014 yesterday.
Vachagan Tadevosyan from Cambodia (horn, duduk wind instruments) competing with our very own Mehboob Band, a must for marriage processions, with Chinese lion dance group vying for soundspace with Bengal's folk bank Dohar at the festival.
"We would like to bring different genre of music in a live format through series of concerts in the two days," Bickram, who introduced the body tapping beat in the world of global percussion, told PTI.
Altogether 22 groups, from Korea, Cambodia and Netherlands besides hosts India and particularly Bengal, will be performing in the two-day 'Siddha Calcutta Pied Piper Festival', Rajashree Behera, Regional Director ICCR, said.
"The people of Kolkata known for their rich cultural tastes, get a chance to not only be a part of soul-stirring performances by these artistes of national and international repute but also may get trained to make instruments if they wish," a Siddha Group spokesman said.
