With no reports of fresh deaths in Bihar floods today, the situation showed signs of improvement in the state as the number of affected people from the floods went down to 40 lakh from yesterday's 41.90 lakh in 12 districts.
The toll in Bihar floods was 198 yesterday.
The floods have been caused mainly by the swollen Ganga apart from other rain-fed rivers such as Sone, Punpun, Burhi Gandak, Ghaghra, Kosi and have affected over 40 lakh people in 2,189 villages under 613 panchayats in 79 blocks of 12 districts in the state, a Disaster Management Department statement said.
A total of seven lakh people have been evacuated so far from the 12 flood-affected districts of Buxar, Bhojpur, Patna, Vaishali, Saran, Begusarai, Samastipur, Lakhisarai, Khagaria, Munger, Bhagalpur and Katihar, the statement said.
According to the Water Resources Department, Ganga was receding at Digha ghat, Gandhi ghat and Hathidah in Patna and in districts of Buxar, Munger and Bhagalpur, but was still flowing above the danger mark at Kahalgaon in Bhagalpur district.
The state government has deployed 2,761 boats for evacuation, while national and state disaster response forces have already been deployed in the affected districts.
A total of 652 relief camps were being run in the flood-hit areas in which 3.90 lakh people have taken shelter, where 402 teams were providing medical services.
