Congress and the BJP do not have many differences on key national issues, a two-term BJP MP from Bihar has said, suggesting his party's opposition to UPA was only an aping of Congress' tactics when it was out of power.
"The good thing about India is that the two main political parties - the Congress and the BJP - do not have too much of a divergent opinion on most of the reforms needed; nuances could be different whether it is insurance reform or labour reform," Uday Singh, MP from Purnea, said at the Heritage Foundation, an eminent Washington-based think-tank.
"...The political situation in India has been rather fluid this past 10 years. And we (BJP) did not have a very cooperative Congress when that party was in the opposition when NDA was in the Government. We (BJP) are probably trying to stupidly do the same thing. I do not know," Singh said in response to a question.
"There could be a greater bipartisan support in bringing about these regulatory changes," he said, when asked about reforms in key sectors of India.
"But I see that in next couple of years' time this kind of attitude is going to change. Because across the political spectrum and certainly the two main formations, the two main parties, do not have too much of difference, we are going to reconcile and we are going to have these reforms," Singh said.
"I belong to the principal opposition party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). We sincerely believe that in 2014, the Indian electorate is going to move away from this fragmented support it gives to various parties and one of the two national formations is going to get into much better position to form government and run the government more effectively," he said.
Singh is visiting Washington as part of a bipartisan parliamentary delegation along with six other MPs.
