"The appointment of Lokayukta by the Supreme Court is unprecedented. Due to activities of Leader of the House and Leader of the Opposition, the Legislature has been insulted and a constitutional crisis has arisen," BJP state president Laxmikant Bajpai said in a statement.
Bajpai said that despite repeated directives of the apex court and the High Court to appoint a new ombudsman, the Chief Minister amended the Lokayukta Act to which the Leader of the Opposition remained a "mute spectator".
Welcoming the SC's move, UPPCC president Nirmal Khatri said it is clear that the government has failed to fulfil its constitutional responsibility.
It's a "glaring" example of failure of the government, he said.
