BJP corporator Sangita Khot was elected today the new Mayor of this city in Western Maharashtra, while Dhiraj Suryawanshi of the same party was elected her deputy.
Khot and Suryawanshi defeated Varsha Nimbalkar and Swati Paradhi, both from the Congress, respectively, in elections held for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
Khot and Suryawanshi received 42 votes each, while Nimbalkar and Paradhi bagged 35 seats each in the 78-member Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation, elections to which were held on on August 1.
The BJP had won 41 seats in the elections, while the Congress and its ally NCP bagged 20 and 15 seats, respectively. Others had won two seats.
An independent who won the elections supported the BJP candidates in the polls for Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
This is for the first time the BJP has its own Mayor and Deputy Mayor in the city.
