Addressing a press conference, Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh Lovely said that the Lieutenant General Najeeb Jung had, through a gazette notification, nominated 30 aldermen in all the three MCDs, and according to DMC Act, these aldermen could not only cast their votes, but also have the right to contest for posts of Zonal Committee chairman and vice-chairman.
"DMC Act also specifies that they (aldermen) have the right to vote and contest for the Standing Committee elections of the MCD, but BJP is not giving such rights to them despite legal department of the Delhi Government noting that aldermen had the same rights as the elected councilors," Lovely told reporters here.
"BJP had lost the deputy mayor's election in South Delhi, and their candidate for the mayoral election had won by just one, and rattled by these developments, the BJP was denying these aldermen their voting rights," he charged.
Another Congress leader Mukesh Sharma also said that all the 30 aldermen have sought a meeting with the LG over these issues, and if need arises, all of them would hold agitations to secure their democratic rights.
