BJP led alliance sweeps to power in Assam

BJP created history today storming to power in Assam, the first time in a north eastern state, as the party along with its allies won 86 of the total 126 seats and pushing ruling Congress to a dismal defeat.
With the win the BJP-led alliance achieved its pre-poll target of winning two-third majority 'Mission 84'. BJP won 60 seats, its allies AGP and BPF 14 and 12 seats respectively.
Congress was decimated to only 26 seats compared to 68 in the outgoing Assembly and its dream of returning to power for the fourth consecutive term was shattered.
AGP's win in 14 seats was also an improvement over the last Assembly polls where it had managed to win only nine. BJP's other ally BPF retained all the 12 seats it had won in the last Assembly polls.

The performance of AIUDF, the main opposition party in the outgoing Assembly, was disappointing as its tally came down to 13 from 18 in the last Assembly polls and its chief Badruddin Ajmal losing to Congress candidate Wajed Ali Choudhury in South Salmara.
The performance of BJP and its allies has been remarkable with the alliance making their entry into hitherto uncharted territories of the minority belt and sweeping the erstwhile Congress bastion of the tea districts.

Among the prominent winners are outgoing Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, BJP chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal, AGP president Atul Bora, former two-time AGP Chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Speaker of the outgoing assembly Pranab Gogoi, BJP state election committee convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma and former AGP working president Phanibhushan Choudhury who made it to the state Assembly for the seventh consecutive term.

Among prominent losers are former union minister Paban Singh Ghatowar, Congress ministers Gautam Roy, Sarat Borkotoky, Etuwa Munda, Bismita Gogoi, Siddeque Ahmed, Chandan Sarkar, Ajit Singh, Basanta Das, Bismita Gogoi, Sumitra Patir, and Girindra Malik.
The ministers of the outgoing cabinet who have retained their seats are Rakibul Hussain, Dr Nazrul Islam, PWD Minister Ajanta Neog, Minority Development and PHED minister Sukur Ali from Chenga.
