Biennial elections to 57 seats in the Upper House of Parliament will be held on June 11, the Election Commission said today. The elections were necessitated as 55 members from 15 states are retiring between June and August. One seat each from Rajasthan and Karnataka vacated by Anand Sharma (Congress) and Vijay Mallya (Independent) will also go for polls.
The Rajya Sabha elections are now held Open Ballot wherein the Members of the Legislative Assembly (excluding the Nominated MLA) have to display the preference of voting to the party whip.
The number of votes required to win the elections is pegged at 42.
Given their current strength in the Assembly, it is highly unlikely either the Congress or the NCP will field more than one nominee. The Congress has 42 MLAs and the NCP 41.
As against this, the BJP has 122 MLAs and the Sena 63, taking their combined strength to 185.
However, in case an election is forced, both the BJP and Sena will fall short of 46 votes each to get their second candidate elected. But if they reach an understanding, they can get their second candidate elected by mustering the required votes.
Other parties in the 289-member Assembly stand as follows: PWP 3, BVA 3, AIMIM 2, MNS 1, Samajwadi Party 1, BBM 1, CPI-M 1, RSP 1, Independents 7 and 1 vacant (nominated).
