After Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's overtures to TDP at a rally last Sunday in Hyderabad, BJP is now trying to develop cordial relations with the party in Parliament by supporting and advising it on crucial issues in both Houses.
Though BJP and TDP do not agree on the issue of formation of Telangana with the former categorically supporting such a move, the two parties which were part of the NDA appear to be working closely in Parliament.
Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj today told the government clearly that TDP members who have been protesting continuously in the House against division of Andhra Pradesh should not be named or suspended.
There are reports that government is mulling asking the Chair in both Houses to either name the TDP MPs or suspend them as their protest is disturbing the proceedings. Sources said when BJP was contacted on the issue, the main Opposition vehemently opposed it.
"This may even entail use of marshals to oust the protesting TDP MPs. We are totally opposed to it. Today the government will do this to TDP, tomorrow they will do it to us," a senior BJP leader said.
The improving equations between TDP and BJP were also visible when Swaraj advised TDP leader Namo Nageshwar Rao to take the protesting MPs from the House to the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Parliament till the crucial Food Security Bill is discussed and passed. "Since this is an important Bill the TDP can shift its protest till it is being discussed," she said.
TDP is said to be undecided on the issue till now but may follow BJP's advice. TDP MPs from Andhra Pradesh, who have resigned their seat in protest against Telangana announcement, protested at the Gandhi statue in Parliament today.
TDP also supported BJP in the all-party meeting held today. When Swaraj suggested that the Judicial Appointment Commission Bill and the Bill to amend the Representation of People Act on Section 8(4) which bars an MP from contesting if sentenced for two or more years by a trial court, be sent to Parliamentary Standing Committee, TDP supported her along with Left parties and BJD.
Modi had reached out to TDP in his public meeting on August 11 at Hyderabad when he praised its late leader N T Rama Rao. Modi and the BJP are keen on getting more allies to the NDA fold, especially after JD-U walked out of the alliance.
