As the metropolis celebrates Diwali, the Mumbai civic body has sensitised people about harmful effects of firecrackers and advised them not to burst them in areas earmarked as silence zone.
In a statement, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said firecrackers not only play havoc with environment but also pose a grave danger to human health, especially to people's ears, eyes and respiratory system.
"Crackers are made of pollutive materials that destroy ecosystem beside emitting toxic gases into the air that we inhale and cause extreme discomfort to babies and senior citizens," said the statement from the BMC's PR division.
It reminded people that schools, colleges, courts, religious places and hospitals among others have been marked as silence zone and therefore bursting crackers at these places is prohibited.
Referring to findings of the Centre for Science and Environment, the civic body said, the centre has found that during Diwali, pollution level becomes 7 to 8 times higher. This causes adverse impact on human health, especially on their respiratory and cardiac system.
The statement said bursting crackers also causes uneasiness and hypertension among people besides sleep and hunger loss.
