While police are yet to ascertain the cause of death, a strong suspicion has emerged that the woman may have been murdered over an illicit affair she had with a neighbour.
The woman, identified as Munni Bibi of Islampur had gone missing from her house since May 8, leading to suspicions that she may have been murdered. Munni was residing in her brother's house along with her three children.
The body was found at about 1:30 pm after which the Phulbari police were informed.
"We are still trying to work out if the case was one of murder as the body of the victim has bloated for being in the water for too long. A post mortem would reveal the cause of death. We are investigating the matter thoroughly though prime facie there seems to be foul play involved," said West Garo Hills, SP, MGR Kumar.
