Additional superintendent of police Bhaskar Mukherjee said prima facie it appeared that the youth, identified as Sourabh Chowdhury a second year student of Mrinalini Dutta College, had died of the injuries inflicted with sharp weapons.
The body has been sent for the customary post mortem and the police have initiated a murder case, he said.
Police also conducted several raids during the day, he added.
Road and rail blockades were put up by locals at Duttapukur to protest against the alleged killing of youth inconveniencing commuters for over an hour.
