Bonded labourers rescued from sugarcane farm

As many as 32 persons from various places of Tamil Nadu were today rescued from a sugarcane farm, where they were working as bonded labourers, official sources said.
The workers, belonging to 10 families from Villipuram, Panruti and Vellore, had taken advance from the farm owner to work.
However, they were compelled to work for 12 to 14 hours daily without holidays.
Acting on a complaint, officials rescued them, the sources said, adding, they would be provided assistance by the government as per rules.
Bonded labour is a human rights violation abolished by the Bonded Labour Abolition Act-1976.
