A 27-year-old woman, while on her way to get married, was severly injured after being allegedly attacked by a jilted lover, who bite her tongue and cheeks at Bhanjanagar, about 80-km from here, police said today.
The incident occurred when the woman along with family members was proceeding to the groom's village Bada Borasingi in a vehicle from her village Jiliba for wedding yesterday.
The accused Sukanta Kumar Swain (36), a father of two children, was following the vehicle. Finding the woman alone in the vehicle which had stopped at a place, he pounced upon her biting her cheeks and tongue.
Other family members had been to the nearby market to purchase some materials parking the vehicle on the road side.
As the accused tried to flee after inflicting injury to the woman, locals caught him and handed over to police.
She had sustained severe injury and was admitted at the sub divisional hospital at Bhanjnagar, police said.
An affair between the two was on earlier. However, Swain got married to his sister-in-law after the death of his elder brother about five years ago and has a son and a daughter, the woman's family sources said.
Swain was angry after her marriage was fixed. In their effort to avoid any unpleasant incident, her family members decided to hold the marriage at the groom's place.
