The director is set to write and direct and adaptationof the 2005 novel "Last Flag Flying", reported the Entertainment Weekly.
Written by Darryl Ponicsan, "Last Flag Flying" is a follow-up to his 1970 book "The Last Detail', which was brought to the big screen by director Hal Ashby and screenwriter Robert Towne.
The drama starred Jack Nicholson and Otis Young as two Navy lifers who are ordered to transport a naive sailor (Randy Quaid) to military prison, but take pity and try to show him a good time first.
Linklater has had his eye on adapting Last Flag Flying for years and had even hoped to bring back Nicholson and Quaid but that seems unlikely now.
Linklater last directed college baseball comedy "Everybody Wants Some".
