Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh today assured government's support to farmers in view of the drought-like situation in the state.
"Due to scanty rainfall this year, drought-like situation is being faced by farmers in the state. But, the state government has already declared 117 tehsils as drought- affected and relief works have already been initiated there," he said in a statement issued here today.
"The state government is completely with the farmers in this difficult situation and they can contact collectors, agriculture and revenue officials of their respective areas in case of any trouble," he said.
"I myself belong to a family of farmers. Hence, I understand their pain and difficulties deeply. It is painful to see damaged crops in drought-affected fields, but in this hour of distress, it is necessary that we all should keep patience and face the situation strongly," he said.
Keeping in view the drought situation, several significant decisions have been taken recently. The state government had decided to include the word "drought" in the list of natural calamities under Revenue Book Circular (6-4), he said.
"This initiative will ensure proper and sufficient compensation to the farmers facing drought-situation," he added.
Earlier, there was a provision for compensation on loss of 50 per cent or above crops which has been amended to 33 per cent.
Recovery of taxes in all the 117 drought-affected tehsils has been suspended and people are being provided with 150 days employment under MNREGS in these tehsils, he said.
The Chief Minister also informed that marginal farmers affected by drought will be provided one quintal paddy seeds free in the 2016 Kharif season.
Besides, free power for agriculture pumps has been increased in drought-affected tehsils from 7,500 units to 9,000 units, the Chief Minister said adding, "In every district, 'Kisaan Mitaan' centres are being operated for giving necessary suggestions to farmers in distress.
