The 38-year-old IT professional was diagnosed to have liver failure due to Budd-chiari syndrome, a rare disease which occurs due to obstruction of blood flow from liver to heart, Hospital Chairman Dr C Palanivelu, told reporters today.
The case came to light during investigation for abdomen distension and weight loss six months back and he was admitted to various hospitals for treatment.
Subsequently the blood flow block persisted resulting in permanent liver failure, and developed as a terminal disease, and liver transplantation was the only option to cure his condition permanently, he said.
The patient and his five-month pregnant wife reached the hospital on May 17 and an eight hour surgery was performed by GEM-MENDANTA team, by removing the affected liver and placing the new one, Palanivelu said.
Dr A S Soin, Group Chairman of all Medanta Liver Transplant Institutes in India, said through video-conferencing that the patient had to undergo a set of three operations for successful transplant.
