Carcasses of at least nine peahens, suspected to be killed after giving poison, were found in a mustard field here, a forest official said today.
Carcasses of nine peahens were recovered yesterday from the mustard field on Bhavpura- Dhirpura road under Nainwa police station area of the district, Ranger, Nainwa forest range Sanjeev Gautam said.
The peahens are suspected to have been killed by feeding poisonous seeds as they were found scattered near the spot where the carcasses were found, he said.
The birds were cremated this morning, he said, adding their viscera would be sent to a forensic lab.
According to Gautum, a case in this connection has been registered under various sections of Wildlife Protection Act 1972 against unidentified persons.
Mukesh Kumar Meena, member of medical board, Nainwa government veterinary hospital said that as per the post mortem report, prima facie the birds were poisoned to death.
Expressing concern over the incident, wildlife activist Vittal Sanaday said that forest department should hold awareness activities among the villagers to check the rising incidents of peahen killing and hunting.
He claimed that the forest department has not given any details to an RTI which he had filled two months ago on the issue.
Forest officials said that from April to July 25 last year, 31 carcasses of the bird were found in the Naiwna forest region.
