The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has turned down the Arunachal Pradesh government's request to investigate the murder case of student leader Ojing Taying terming it "simple in nature", the state assembly was informed on Wednesday.
Ojing Tayeng, former finance secretary of All East Siang District Students Union (AESDSU) and two of his friends were attacked by unidentified youths in Itanagar on the night of June 10, 2017. Tayeng succumed to his injuries in a Guwahati hospital on June 19.
Responding to a question raised during Question Hour by Congress MLA Ninong Ering, Home Minister Bamang Felix said the CBI had in a letter during August 2018 expressed its inability to take up the matter as the case was simple in nature and does not have inter-state ramifications.
The murder case was first investigated by Itanagar Police and then transferred to a special investigation team (SIT) on April 27 last year.
However, the SIT failed to make any headway into the case, leading to the home commissioner seeking a CBI probe in July 2018.
Felix informed the assembly that the prime suspect has been arrested.
"Hopefully we will able to make a breakthrough in the case soon," the home minister said.
