Delhi Police will install CCTV cameras on the border of national capital adjoining UP with the help of funds provided by BJP's East Delhi MP for keeping a check on criminals escaping to neighbouring state after committing crime in the city.
"Delhi shares a long border with UP and often criminals cross over to the neighbouring state after committing crime in the city. Incidents of chain snatching and robbery have become common, requiring enhanced surveillance," East Delhi MP Maheish Girri said in a joint press conference held at Delhi Police Headquarters.
Girri has provided Rs 1.57 crore from his MPLAD fund to the Delhi Police for installing CCTV cameras on the border of Delhi near Vivek Vihar and Mayur Vihar, under Eastern Range.
"These cameras will be installed to keep an eye on the people coming and going from Delhi. These will also help in enhancing security of women and elderly people," he said.
Joint CP of Eastern Range Sanjay Beniwal said that it was perhaps for the first time that MP fund was being utilized by the police for strengthening surveillance and security.
"We have been doing it for some time and under community policing we have encouraged installation of about 1.52 lakh CCTV cameras. The step by Girri is unprecedented and will help police in fighting criminals in a more effective way," Beniwal said.
East Delhi is a densely populated area and we are doing our best to reduce crime rate. A community policing programme will be initiated in the area jointly with elected representatives, resident welfare associations and citizen to ensure crime free East Delhi, he added.
The funds provided by the MP for installing CCTV cameras are likely to be available in one and half months, after which work will start on it.
