A Traditional Handicraft
Production-cum-Training Centre for the Unemployed Youth was today inaugurated by Kayoko Furukawa, Consul, Culture, Information and Development, Consulate-General of Japan at Chennai at Sulthan Bathery in the district.
The centre, which will be run by Shreyas Social Service Centre, was constructed with the funds offered by the People and Government of Japan under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects (GGP), P B Sasikumar, Project Officer, Shreyas, said.
At this newly constructed centre, nine kinds of vocational training, including bag making, saree painting, embroidery works and natural fibre, will be provided to the unemployed tribal women and youth.
Among them, 100 will be transiently employed at the production centre to further develop their practical skills before they establish their own units or find other employment avenues.This will result in skill development among the unemployed and also facilitate improved income and improved living status of families in Wayanad district, he said.
Those who spoke included T. Sathiyamoorthi, Handicrafts Promotion Officer, Ministry of Textiles, O.M. George President, Sulthan Bathery Gram Panchayat and Mayuko Miyauchi, Project Coordinator.
Msgr Dr Varghese Thannickakuzhy, Vicar General, Diocese of Bathery, presided.
