Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ashwani Kumar has convened a meeting of representatives of churches, NGOs and political parties who have submitted representations seeking change of polling and counting dates for the coming state Assembly polls.
The Election Commission (EC) has fixed the date of polling and counting of votes on December 4 and December 8, respectively.
Sources in the state election department said Kumar convened the meeting after receiving instructions from the EC.
Those which submitted representations were the Presbyterian Church of India Mizoram Synod, the Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC) or the conglomerate of church leaders, the United Pentecostal Church - Mizoram (UPC-Mizoram), the Mizoram People's Forum (MPF), the Mizoram Upa Pawl (MUP) or Mizoram elders' association.
Central Committee of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) and recognised political parties, the ruling Congress, the Mizo National Front (MNF), the Mizoram People's Conference (MPC), the Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP), the BJP and the Trinamool Congress also submitted a joint memorandum.
These churches, NGOs and political parties sought change in the dates of polling and counting of votes as the polling day coincides with the time when the Mizoram Synod, the highest decision-making body of the Presbyterian would be holding a state-wide conference in Aizawl and the counting day falls on Sunday, the sacred day for the Christians.
