A Cyprus-based firm has registered a case of cheating with the Economic Offences Wing against Abhishek Verma, an accused in the Navy war room leak case, and Siddharth Tytler, son of Congress leader Jagdish Tytler, and their associates for allegedly duping 1.1 million dollar on the pretext of setting up a mobile company, police said.
According to the police, the complaint in this regard was made on Thursday by one Joseph Rubinstein, a representative of Corewip, a subsidiary of TCM Mobile LLC, after which a case was registered at EOW under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code.
In his complaint, Rubinstein alleged the accused persons asked him to start a telecom company in a joint venture in India with them and asked him to invest in it and later fled with 1.1 million dollar amounting to Rs 5 crore.
"Joseph Rubinstein and Haim Yashar (the then Authorized Representative of the Complainant) were approached by Abhishek Verma with a proposal to enter into a joint venture agreement for providing services in India under IISP license with voice, including mobile and/or fixed line voice," said a police official.
Verma further projected that he was politically resourceful and that sons and relatives of powerful ministers and leaders were his partners and thus won Rubinstein's trust.
"Before we invested in the company, we met with the accused persons several times and were assured by them. Later, around Rs 5 crore that we invested into the project was fraudulently withdrawn by Verma and his associates using forged documents," the complainant alleged.
The police have registered an FIR in this case and taken up investigation, police said.
