Punjab State Commission for Protection of Child Rights today issued directions to all schools in the state to recruit 10 per cent extra trained drivers and conductors for school buses who can work during the leave period of the employed ones.
Taking a strong view of untrained drivers and conductors plying school buses during the leave period of drivers and conductors, Sukesh Kalia, Commission Chairman observed the lives of innocent school children cannot be allowed to be put in danger by handing over buses to untrained drivers.
Directing to adopt an institutionalised standard operating procedure for such eventualities, the Commission directed that each school must have 10 per cent additional drivers and conductors to take charge of school buses during the leave period the employed ones.
Also ensure that relievers fulfill all qualification laid down by Supreme Court for school buses.
Giving directions to the District Transport Officers and District Education Officers of the state, Kalia directed them to ensure the professional credentials of the candidates before recruiting them for the buses.
They should be having a valid driving license, besides having an experience certificate of handling heavy vehicles. He also asked the authorities to ensure that the guidelines of the Supreme Court are not flouted under the 'Safe Vahan Scheme.
