An airport in east China's Zhejiang Province today resumed operations after being closed for more than a month following a major security breach in which a passenger smuggled a lighter and sword into a plane and attempted to set fire to the aircraft while it was landing.
The operations at Taizhou airport were suspended from July 29 after an unidentified passenger on Shenzhen Airlines flight tried to set fire to the aircraft at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport on July 26 before attacking the passengers with sword.
While the arsonist was arrested following an emergency landing, no further details have been released by the Chinese police so far.
The flight was carrying over 100 passengers and crew. All of them were evacuated after emergency landing.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China had asked local branches to conduct safety checks on medium-sized, small and new airports after the incident
Shenzhen Airlines in August awarded a total of 2.5 million yuan (around USD 400,000) to nine crew members and 150,000 (USD 23,598) yuan each to the two passengers for subduing the suspected arsonist during the flight.
