A heated argument broke out between a woman, who had earlier filed a complaint against Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury, and the latter's supporters at the Press Club here today over holding a press conference.
B Kalavathi had earlier alleged that Chowdhury had taken Rs 1.1 crore from her husband, promising to get him a Congress ticket to contest from Wyra Assembly constituency ahead of the 2014 elections. She had also accused Chowdhury of abusing her on the basis of caste when she sought her money back.
Talking about today's incident, Khammam II Town police said, "Kalavathi had taken permission to hold a news conference at 3.30 pm at the Press Club. However, she arrived and sat inside the venue before her allotted time. Chowdhury's followers were scheduled to hold a conference at 3 pm at the venue, for which they had taken necessary permission."
However, when Chowdhury's followers entered the room, Kalavathi started shouting at them alleging that their intention was to disturb her press conference.
"Following this, there was a heated argument between the supporters of Kalavathi and Chowdhury," Police Inspector Srinivas Reddy said.
"Members of the media, who were present at the venue, intervened, following which Chowdhury's supporters first held the press meet, followed by Kalavathi," the inspector said, adding that no complaint or case has been registered in this regard.
Khammam Urban Police had registered a case of cheating under relevant sections of SC/ST Atrocities Act against Chowdhury, an RS MP, last week, following a directive from the High Court in Hyderabad on a petition filed by Kalavathi, widow of Dr Bhukya Ramachandra Naik, a surgeon and Congress supporter from Wyra in Khammam district.
