Seeking support of the civil society to eradicate drug menace, DIG Jammu-Kathua range Ashkoor Wani today said cooperation of the people was important to address the problem.
"We have to accept this reality that drugs are slowly tightening grip on the youth of the State. It is high time to start a war against this menace. We seek your (civil society) support to eradicate drug menance," he said while addressing a function organised by 'Team Jammu' in connection with the World Anti-Drug Day.
Wani said better coordination among parents, teachers, mohalla committee, panchayats and policemen was imperative to check the growing influence of drugs on the youth.
"10 to 15 per cent of our youth are addicted to drugs. We are duty bound to liberate this section from the yoke of addiction," he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman, Team Jammu, Zorawar Singh Jamwal reiterated commitment of the team to make Jammu free from drug addiction.
"We started our campaign in the month of November 2015 and people are coming out in large numbers to take this campaign to its logical end," he said.
Jamwal said efforts are being made to rope in panchayat members and religious bodies to take this campaign to every nook and corner of the region.
"Involvement of Baba Kailakh Nath Devasthan Management Committee and members of 50 panchayats from different parts is a sign of better coordination among different sections of the society to jointly carry on this campaign," he said.
SSP, Jammu, Dr Sunil Gupta, said Jammu Police has started "Sanjeevani" to appraise youth about the negative impact of drugs and help them in rehabilitation process.
"It is the result of our campaign that nearly 60 cases regarding drugs have been registered in last six months in Jammu district," he said.
