Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today warned all contractors and engineers of strict actions, if works related to flood damage and other government schemes are of poor standard.
"The state government would not tolerate any negligence regarding standard of construction of roads and embankments. If the construction works are found to be below standard, then the responsible engineers and contractors would be sent to jail," Sonowal said.
While reviewing the works of Majuli, he issued strict orders to engineers, contractors and officers of different departments to maintain the highest standard in implementation of all government schemes and programmes, an official release said.
Sonowal reviewed the functioning of Brahmaputra Board, Water Resource Department, Public Works Department and others in the district and said that funds allotted for rural development works must not be misused.
The chief minister also took stock of the new projects and schemes to be implemented by Brahmaputra Board and Water Resource Department in Majuli.
"Brahmaputra Board will complete insertion of geo bags at the 23 km length of the embankment from Tekelifuta to Samaguri for a total cost of Rs 198.99 crore in the first part of December, the chief minister was apprised," the statement said.
On the other hand, the Water Resource Department has prepared a plan for protecting Majuli from flood and erosion of Suwanasiri and Luit-Khabalu rivers at a cost of Rs 70 crore.
During the meeting, Sonowal also directed the two Block Development Officers of Majuli and the officers of P&RD Department to complete the construction works of all the houses allotted under Pradahan Mantri Awas Yojna by March 31, 2018.
Besides, he directed the Power Department to ensure 100 per cent electrification of Majuli at an early date.
