Referring to the deaths of Richard Loitam in Bangalore and Dana Sangma in Gurgaon, Congress member Thokchom Meinya said during Zero Hour that the recent spate of such instances has "instilled a sense of alienation" among a large number of Northeastern people "in their own country".
Maintaining that "one incident after another" had taken place in the recent past, he said the government and the Home Ministry should take urgent steps to check crime against the people of the Northeast working or studying in various parts of the country, including Delhi, and ensure security to them.
While Dana Silva M Sangma, a student of Amity University, and niece of Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma, committed suicide on grounds of alleged humiliation on April 24, Loitam's body was found on April 18 under mysterious circumstances in Bangalore.
His Congress colleague J P Agarwal sought the creation of a legislative council in Delhi, saying the Constitutional provision to create it should be reviewed as the population of the national capital had risen from 35 lakh, when the Assembly came into being, to over two crore.
Shailendra Kumar (SP) drew the government's attention towards the situation prevailing in the Allahabad University after recent incidents of violence between students and the police.
He said the students were evicted from hostels when they were preparing for various competitive examinations and pointed towards a large number of vacancies in the faculty. Kumar wanted urgent steps by the government to restore normalcy. (More) PTI ARC NAB AKK
