With Diwali round the corner, Congress today attacked the government over rising prices of essential commodities, wondering as to how the common man would celebrate the festival of lights.
"How can the common man celebrate Diwali when the price of sugar in the last two years has risen from Rs 30 to Rs 43, besan from Rs 40 to Rs 140, arhar dal from Rs 73 to Rs 140, chana from 50 Rs 140 and atta from Rs 18 to Rs 21 per kg?" Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza asked.
She said the BJP came to power on the promise of containing price rise, but prices have shot up in the past two-and-a-half years.
Besides, she said, the industrial growth during the first five months of the current financial year has been the lowest in 10 years.
"The past two years have witnessed an abysmal decline in industrial growth. The April-August industrial growth, at just -0.27 per cent, is the lowest since 2007-08 when the global economic meltdown took place," she said.
