Attacking BJP and Congress for not backing Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal over the current face-off between Delhi government and Home Ministry, senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Yogendra Yadav alleged both the parties had double standards over the issue.
"Both the main parties (Congress and BJP) have double standards. Both the parties had the agenda of striving for full statehood for Delhi in their manifesto in the assembly elections.
"BJP has been saying it supports full statehood and on paper that police should come under state government. If that is the case, then why doesn't BJP come and support the CM with their MLAs? It is more surprising because Congress also had the same issue in its agenda when it is in power at the Center for 10 years and was in power in the state for 15 years," Yadav said at a press conference.
He said it was the goal of the party to bring Delhi Police under the state government's control.
"In our manifesto, we have said AAP will struggle to bring Delhi police under the control of Delhi government. Clause 12 in the manifesto clearly says that," Yadav said.
Terming the Chief Minister holding dharna as a "big step in democracy", Yadav said AAP government will "use the public mandate" and stick to what it has promised in the party manifesto.
"The Chief Minister had to take this step of holding dharna as no action was being taken over prostitution and drug peddling in Khirke Extension against anyone in the Danish woman's rape case or in the case of Rakhi Birla (where Sagarour SHO had a tiff with the Child and Development Minister)," Yadav said.
The party has also asked its workers to be vigilant as "Congress and BJP workers" could disrupt the dharna.
"In dharna, there are Congress and BJP supporters in disguise wearing Aam Aadmi Party caps. Their motive is to create chaos as it happened during Damini case (referring to the protest during the December 16 Delhi gangrape case last year).
"I appeal to the party workers and people of Delhi....We are going to hold dharna in a peaceful manner. We will not be affected by any kind of chaos, arson," senior party leader and member of Political Affairs Committee (PAC) Gopal Rai said.
