Reiterating their demand of CBI probe against Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majthia, Punjab Congress today staged protests across the state and demanded his immediate removal from the cabinet after an alleged drug racket kingpin accused him of patronising the trade.
Activists of Punjab Congress also burnt the effigies of the Revenue Minister at Ludhiana, Phagwara, Moga, Amritsar and other places across the state and demanded his immediate dismissal from the cabinet and registration of case against him.
Punjab Congress General Secretary Fateh Jung Singh Bajwa, brother of party's state chief Partap Singh Bajwa, demanded a immediate arrest of Majithia and said "he has no moral right to continue in the government."
Majithia's involvement in drug racket had became crystal clear after drug lord who is in police custody has named the minister and also claimed that two more ministers are involved in the drug racket, Fateh said in a statement.
"There was no other choice before Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal other than ordering Majithia being sent behind bars. Majithia could not be pardoned for such a heinous crime against people of Punjab," he said, and warned that Congress would launch a strong agitation if the Chief Minister tries to "shield" him.
Expressing that they have "no hope of justice" by Punjab Police, the Congress leader said "if probe was handed over to CBI, Bhola may expose the names of other Akali leaders allegedly involved in the racket.
He took a dig at Badal and said now he would have known that drugs were not smuggled from Afghanistan or Pakistan rather manufactured by his own family members in the state.
The SAD leaders were misleading the people by launching anti-drug campaigns, he added.
Meanwhile, Congress activists in Amritsar burnt an effigy of the Minister at Majithia - his home turf.
The activists would hold a dharna against the Minister tomorrow at Amritsar, senior Congress leader Lalli Majithia said there.
He claimed that if the Chief Minister fails to take action against the Minister, Congress activists won't allow him to enter his Majithia constituency.
Meanwhile, workers of Ludhiana District Congress Committee (Urban) also staged a demonstration and dharna at Jagraon ridge.
