"Had the police taken prompt action, the innocent woman could have been saved. The Chief Minister should resign on moral grounds," said President of Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee's women wing, Sasmita Behera after visiting the village.
An eight-member team of the Mahaila Congress visited the village to take stock of the situation.
Besides interacting with the family members of the deceased woman, they also held discussion with the police about the incident.
The family members staged a road blockade by lying the body in front of Polasara police station demanding immediate arrest of the accused persons. The situation turned ugly when a mob set ablaze vehicles and damaged furniture of Polasara police station yesterday.
"We came to know that the miscreants had passed comments to one of the daughters of the deceased. The girl has been going to a private school in nearby village for last one year. The family members had complained about it to the police several times and even meet the SP (Ganjam). However, the police did not take action against the miscreants," Behera alleged.
Under the circumstances, the CM, who holds the home portfolio, should resign on moral grounds and dismiss the police personnel who failed to discharge their duty of protecting the woman, Behera added.
SP (Ganjam) Asish Singh said raids were on to arrest the accused persons.
The situation in Polasara town where the mob had attacked the police station yesterday in protest against the woman's killing was now normal, the police said.
