Cong govts corrupt since Nehru regime, alleges Assam CM

Congress governments at the Centre were involved in corrupt practices since the time of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal alleged Tuesday.

The BJP leader's accusations came when he said the Supreme Court verdict on Rafale deal showed that there was no scam in it and that Congress president Rahul Gandhi has been spreading lies about the Narendra Modi government.

The Congress got the opportunity to rule the nation for more than five decades, but it proved to be the most corrupt party in the country, Sonowal told a press conference.

"Right from Pandit Nehru regime to the last Manmohan Singh regime, if you go through the history of Congress, in every tenure you will discover corrupt practices, either in this deal or that deal," Sonowal alleged.

However, he did not specify any corrupt practice allegedly involved by Congress governments.

The chief minister claimed that the NDA government led by Narendra Modi has been providing good governance and working for development of all sections of people and mainly for the northeast.

"With the defeat of the Congress in the assembly elections in Mizoram, the region has become free of the Congress. Despite its debacle in the assembly elections in five states, the BJP would form government at the Centre (after the Lok Sabha polls) and Narendra Modi will again be the Prime Minister," Sonowal asserted.

On the Assam government's demand for re-verification of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft, he said it was made after following reports that some 'suspected' names are there in the complete NRC draft on June 30.

"After publication of the NRC draft, many organisations and parties levelled allegations that some illegal immigrants' names are there in the list. To verify this, we sought approval from the Supreme Court to permit re-verification of at least 20 per cent samples," the Assam chief minister said.
