Cong has a bright chance to emerge as largest alternative in J&K: Mir

The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Congress today claimed that the party has a bright chance to emerge as the largest alternative in the state due to "total disenchantment of the people" from erstwhile allies BJP and PDP.

A spokesperson for the state Congress made the claim after a party leaders' meeting chaired by state president G A Mir, during which, he said, the party reviewed the overall political scenario in the state and devised its plan for the next assembly elections here.

The meeting, attended by former ministers, former members of the Parliament and state legislature, besides the other prominent party leaders of the Jammu region, deliberated upon various aspects and issues to strengthen the party and to emerge stronger in future elections, the spokesperson said.

He said the meeting reviewed the overall political scenario in the state and devised the future course of action to gear up the party's activities for the next democratic exercise in the state.

Mir also apprised the state Congress leaders of the discussions in the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Delhi yesterday under the leadership of party president Rahul Gandhi.

He also apprised the participants of the CWC's important decisions and the course of action to be taken by it for the future general elections to the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies, where ever they are due, the spokesman said.

He said the meeting appealed to the party leaders and workers to rise to the occasion and stand unitedly against the communal, divisive and opportunist forces in the state and work for strengthening the party at grass root levels.

The meeting also took stock of the organisational activities and the steps for intensifying them at all levels with an aim to meet the future challenges and emerge stronger and victorious in electoral exercises, the spokesman said.
