Congress today hit back at the government for targeting it for disruptions in Parliament alleging that the NDA dispensation was being "very insensitive" to the demands of its detractors and pursuing the agenda of "opposition-mukt bharat."
Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad also singled out Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu for attack remarking that "I have never seen a Parliamentary Affairs Minister spearheading confrontation."
Asking the government to shed its "arrogance and vendetta politics", Azad, who had been Parliamentary Affairs Minister thrice, said when in power, Congress often took up issues raised by the Opposition.
"Then, I had told my colleagues that duty of Parliamentary Affairs Minister is to work with all parties. From Treasury benches, I had said that Parliamentary Affairs Minister represents both government and opposition," Azad said targeting Naidu.
Insisting that the government's efforts to take the opposition along was a failure, he recalled that in 1991-96, Congress ran a minority government but still introduced revolutionary changes in the economy. "Congress had the ability to take Opposition along."
He said the problem was that BJP "failed" in running the government and they have "no intention" to run Parliament. He said that the BJP government, despite their numbers, couldn't make Parliament function.
Addressing a joint press conference along with party leader in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, Azad said BJP's election agenda was 'Congress-mukt Bharat'. "Now they've changed their agenda to 'Opposition-mukt Bharat'"
"We were very sensitive to the demands of the Opposition. We took the resignation of one Maharashtra Chief Minister because his mother-in-law had a flat in a building which had not got the proper permission.
"They had sought resignation of our Home Minister taking the plea that he changes clothes three times a day, but now their Prime Minister does it ten times and has exhausted all colour options...They are very insensitive to our demands", Azad told reporters.
He said that the government remained "very insensitive" despite Congress raising the issue of resignation of three Chief Ministers -- Rajasthan, MP & Chhattisgarh who were allegedly involved in scams running into 1000's of crores.
"They could have at least ordered an inquiry in the wake of the demands and then could have even saw to it that the whole thing is diluted...Even the iron and the gold gets melted in the face of extreme heat. They do not believe in democracy. They wear many masks," he alleged.
