While four men who were taking the consignment to Naxals in a government ambulance were arrested last night, police were looking for Congress leader and former Zilla Parishad president Bandopant Mallelwar and medical officer Dr Ravindra Karpe.
Acting on a tip-off, local police stopped an ambulance belonging to Porla Primary Health Centre near Tadgaon in Bhamragad tehsil last night, said Suvez Haque, Superintendent of Police.
Search of the vehicle yielded arms and explosives including four detonators, 1 kg of gelatin, 10 rounds of AK-47 rifle, along with medicines and tarpaulin sheets.
They allegedly told police that Mallelwar and Karpe had asked them to take the consignment to ultras. Police have registered offences under Indian Arms Act, Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against the arrested men, Mallelwar and Karpe.
