A day after a non-bailable warrant against him in a drug case was stayed by the High Court, AAP MLA Sukhpal Khaira today accused the ruling Congress and opposition SAD-BJP combine of joining hands and unleashing "political terror" to "gag" him.
He accused the government of trying to frame him in a false case, and alleged that the police and prosecution were acting at the behest of the Congress government.
"The accusations by the ruling Congress and opposition SAD-BJP alliance against me is a combined vendetta," Khaira told reporters here today.
"In the past, the party in power used to harass its political opponents. But this time, the Congress-led government and opposition SAD-BJP combine have joined hands against me," he alleged.
"This amounts to political terrorism," the AAP MLA said, adding that they did not want him to speak on corruption, drug mafia and sand mafia, which is why they were making false allegations against him.
"They want to gag me," he claimed.
While refusing to resign as the leader of the opposition in the Punjab Assembly as demanded by various quarters, the AAP leader in a show of strength presented 14 MLAs of his party and two its ally Lok Insaaf Party at the press conference today.
AAP MLAs H S Phoolka, Kanwar Sandhu, Baljinder Kaur, Amarjit Sandoa, Kultar Singh and Budh Ram were not present at the press conference. Khaira claimed they legislators who were not present could not make it because of some urgent work.
Khaira said leaders like Amarinder Singh, Parkash Singh Badal and Sukhbir Singh Badal never resigned from their positions of power despite being summoned and chargesheeted.
He claimed that when Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Singh Badal took oath as the chief minister and the deputy chief minister respectively in 2007, they were not only summoned by the court but were also chargesheeted in Prevention of Corruption Act and Disproportionate Assets case.
Chief Minister Amarinder Singh is facing charges in an income tax case, the AAP leader claimed.
A court in Fazilka had issued summons to Khaira under Section 319 of the CrPC following an application from the prosecution. He was told to appear on November 30.
The court on October 31 had sentenced nine people to imprisonment in a trans-border heroin smuggling racket which surfaced in 2015.
However, Punjab and Haryana High Court yesterday stayed the non-bailable warrant issued by Fazilka court against Khaira.
