Cong to approach CBI for probe into fake certificates scandal

Former Minister of State and Congress leader V Narayanasamy today said his party would press for a CBI probe into alleged instances of increasing number of students gaining admission to professional colleges in government quota by producing fake certificates relating to their nativity and residence in Puducherry.
Talking to reporters here, he said six students had joined the medical colleges through Centralised Admission Committee in this quota by submitting certificates declaring them as natives of Puducherry while they actually belong to Tamil Nadu and had not satisfied minimum period of residence to be eligible for admission under government quota.
He alleged that government officials and those having close access to the ministers were involved in issuing fake certificates.

Narayanasamy said his party would wait for a week for the government to approach the CBI failing which his party would straightaway approach the central agency.
He dubbed as "eyewash", the current enquiry by the Revenue authorities into the incidents and said only a CBI probe would bring to light the scams and racket in issuing the certificates.
Congress local unit had already submitted a memorandum to President Pranab Mukherjee during his recent visit here, seeking a detailed probe by the CBI into the "corrupt practices" involved in issuing certificates to students, he said.

Narayanasamy said the CAG report relating to Puducherry government for fiscal 2012-13 had exposed several "financial irregularities, corrupt practices and also corruption in government undertakings and deficiencies in utilising Central grants for that fiscal".

Around 38 percent of the total budget allocation of Rs 5760 crores remained unspent by the government, he said.
Narayanasamy charged the BJP government at the Centre with letting down the Tamil Nadu fishermen facing hardships at the hands of the Sri Lankan naval personnel. The Centre had also failed to initiate steps to recover the fishing vessels impounded by the Sri Lankan authorities.
He declined to comment on the recent announcement of his party's Rajya Sabha member, P Kannan extending moral support to jailed AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa.
