Some women of a community were returning after offering Janmashtami prayers at a function last night when youths of another community allegedly passed objectionable remarks against them, police said.
A passerby identified as Sunil and his son Sumit heard the remarks and protested against it. This enraged the youths, who beat the father-son duo, they said.
The situation soon flared up and members of both the communities pelted stones at each other.
Police official Pradeep Kumar Tripathi, who had gone to the spot was also injured in the stone pelting, they said adding the father-son duo have been admitted to a hospital.
Six persons have been arrested in connection with the clash and efforts are on to nab others involved in the incident, police said.
The situation in the area is stable, police said.
