Couple attempts self-immolation at Coimbatore Collectorate

A couple today attempted self-immolation in front of the District Collectorate here allegedly due to the police inaction on their complaint against two persons, who had assaulted and threatened them a few days ago.
Thirty-three-year-old Dinesh and his wife Nithya (26) living near Vadavalli here came to the Collectorate and suddenly poured kerosene on them in a bid to immolate themselves, when the police personnel on duty overpowered them, police said.
The couple were then taken to the nearby police station, they said.
Interrogation revealed that two persons had allegedly assaulted the couple a few days ago, due to previous enmity.

A complaint was lodged and police took the accused into custody and released them on the same day.
Following the release, the duo again returned and assaulted the couple besides threatening them with dire consequences, the couple had told police.
The couple had then gone to the city police commissioner's office yesterday and attempted to set themselves on fire.
However, some officials prevented them from doing so and sent them back, police said.
